I am a Singaporean born Indian property agent for 11 years. I get a bulk of my agent fees from rentals as due to high of influx of foreigners coming to Singapore for work and many poor Singaporeans letting go of their privacy for extra rental income. I and my fellow property agents find it troublesome to find rooms for tenants from India and China where the search can go on for months and we will inform that they have to find room on their own or go stay at dormitory. I will share the 3 reasons why many Singapore houseowners will not rent out their rooms to India and China people based on my understanding from houseowners.
Firstly, Workers from both countries initially will agree to all the things in tenancy agreement but will not follow it. If asked, they will just say they forget or they did not know it. They will mess up everything in the house with the 2 reasons but will put the blames on houseowner after it.
Secondly, Their cooking is smelly and worst part is that they do not clean immediately thus the smell will linger on until neighbours come and complain to houseowner. I also had case where a tenant cooked and burned down a kitchen as she forgot to off the knob before going to sleep
Lastly, they are loud and nonchalant attitude tends irks everyone. Tenants from other nationalities especially Myanmar , Bangladesh and Philippines do not wish share rooms with them especially Indians.
For Indians tenants, another problem faced by houseowners is that they are smelly and like to dry their clothes in the room which is occupied by other tenants as well. This create a unpleasant environment and mould tend to go on the houses fast.
For China tenants, they do not speak English and will expect everyone to speak in pure mandarin to them as if Singapore is part of China. Thus for non-chinese but sometimes for even Chinese houseowner, I will have to talk to negotiate terms or stop a problem.
But not all tenants from India and China are bad but most given a lot of problem to houseowner especially those who cannot English properly then I will be caught in between to settle the issue because I speak both Tamil and Chinese.
As we all are immigrant from different nations, I hope Singapore will be a more inclusive place and better place for everyone to stay! 😊
